Occupational Therapists help people overcome obstacles and take part in the daily lives that matter to them. Many of us have supervision inside our organisation, but the value of looking for supervision outside the workplace is often overlooked.

This article looks at why external clinical supervision matters: how it supports professional growth, widens your perspective and improves the care your clients receive.

A wider view of practice

External supervision takes you beyond the limits of your own workplace. Supervisors from different backgrounds and specialties bring other viewpoints, new approaches and emerging practice. That exposure builds your knowledge, sharpens your clinical reasoning and helps you bring fresh ideas into your work.

Unbiased feedback and support

Internal supervision can be shaped by organisational dynamics and hierarchy. An external supervisor sits outside those pressures. They bring fresh eyes, honest observations and guidance tailored to you, which makes open conversation and trust easier, and helps you tackle challenges with confidence.

Dropping the facade

Many clinicians feel pressure at work to appear more expert than they are. The fear of looking less capable can lead to a cycle of pretending. External supervision offers a confidential space to put that down and talk openly about uncertainty, challenges and learning needs, without judgement and with someone who is not part of your workplace.

Support that fits your caseload

OTs work with a wide range of clients, each with their own needs and goals. No internal supervisor can hold expertise in every area. External supervision lets you find someone who specialises in your field or knows your client group well, so the guidance you receive matches the work you actually do.

Finding your match

The relationship between clinician and supervisor is the foundation of good supervision. Like any relationship, it works best when there is genuine rapport and the supervisor’s style suits how you learn. The right match creates space for growth and reflection. A poor match can lead to misunderstanding, disengagement and weaker outcomes.

In summary

External clinical supervision plays a vital role in the growth of Occupational Therapists, with benefits that reach well beyond a single organisation. As our profession grows more complex, it can be a catalyst for ongoing learning, innovation and excellent care.
